How to work out final percentages of plum/damson gin

Post by maybelline » 02 Dec 2010, 14:27

Hello there, does any one have any clue how to work out the final percentage of a finished plum gin, made in the same way as sloe gin by steeping the fruits in gin with a few ounces of sugar? I am wondering whether to do it on the final amount of liquid left over after the plums are removed, or should it be done with a hydrometer ? We have a small plum orchard, and are experimenting with small scale plum products for sale- but obviously we cant sell it if we dont get the percentage right.... !!! Many thanks. I have emailed a couple of commercial producers, but no reply......

This has been asked (and answered) many times before, for example: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=446

You really need to know the start volume and abv and the finish volume to make the calculation. I usually reckon about 30% with late-picked sloes (less juice).
