Sloe & Onion Chutney

Post by dr-white » 04 Nov 2007, 18:54

I have just made some sloe and onion chutney with my leftover sloes. I can't remember the exact quantities, but they are similar to that of the sticky (, and I have changed a few ingredients and the method.

1kg sloes
250ml red wine vinegar
400g soft brown sugar
300g currants
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
2 onions

1) Put sloes and vinegar in a large pan and gently simmer until the sloes are very soft.
2) Pass the mixture through a sieve and return the juice to the pan.
3) Add the remaining ingredients and gently simmer for about 30-45mins.
4) Divide into jars and store for as long as you can.

It's worth checking the sweetness of the chutney before you jar it - you can add more sugar if required and cook for a while longer.

My chutney was a bit too runny so I have just emptied it back into the pan with a few apples and cooked it up.

Just had a go at this and it's all nicely potted up.

I think I panicked a little and cooked it for longer than necessary, as it's set almost like jam!?! But hey ho- I can call it "Sticky Sloe Marmaladw" or something 8)
