Re: First timer! Are these bits normal?!

I've had the odd bit of jelly (though not as much as in your pic). The sloe gin is fine. I assume it's just the pectin from the stone.

Re: Sloes - super early this year

Yes - they are ready right now. I just picked a load from Box Hill - 3 litres worth.

Going for more next weekend at the local Hurst Road haunt that everyone uses! Thousands of sloes!!!

Re: Sloe gin the Sipsmith way?

I was brought up a stones throw from Sipsmiths and I do love their gin. However this is complete rubbish if you ask me. My guess is they are saying this to make their mass produced sloe gin seem authentic. A) Fresh sloes will always be better than frozen - the freezing process can damage some of the...

Re: Cloudy sloe gin

I wouldn't worry - see how it looks in a month or so. It should settle. Once strained it should be fine.

RE: the grub. I had that one year. me and a mate drunkenly ate half each (little Caterpillar) like tequila. We didn't die.

Re: Advice

Properly sealed and kept in a cool dark place I can't see it being a problem.

Much as I love Sloe Gin, I think if it was me I'd be more grateful for a decent bottle of wine or port kept for 18 years!

Re: Are the Sloes a bit scarce this year everywhere?

London is heaving with sloes. I was down in Kent (Nr Deal) over the weekend and also saw lots. I think it's going to be a great year. :?

Re: Sloes in London

I walked The Hogsmill River (small river, tributary of the Thames that flows from Ewell to Kingston) on Saturday. The whole route was heaving with sloes. There where also plenty of apple, plum, bramble and mushrooms. Really good foraging. I also saw 3 x kinsfishers!

I think it's around this time the sloes start growing. I'd check back in a few weeks.

Re: slow cider and sherry

I'd wouldn't use really rubbish cider - you've got to drink it!

I made mine with some scrumpy I bought in Cornwall. It was damn nice chilled and pretty leathal!

Re: Sloes in London

Oh dear - almost certain it was elderberries you picked. These are the other main berries I remember from Hurst Rd.

Next year if you're going to Hurst Rd, post a msg on here - I'm not far away and will be picking again. I could show you the sloes!

Re: Grub appeared in bottle

I personally wouldn't worry about it. I've had a caterpillar in one of my bottles before. I figured the alchohol would have killed off anything bad on it. I even considered eating it ala tequila but couldn't bring myself to do it........

Re: First time I have made sloe gin and advice needed please

If I was you I'd go out on bike or walk along the river in Hanwell or get on the canal. You'll find lots of sloe bushes along there.
Horsenden Hill (in Perivale) has lots of sloes. Nice walk as well, though quite steep!
I used to live in Ealing so know the area. I wasn't a sloe gin maker then though!

Re: First time I have made sloe gin and advice needed please

All sounds perfectly fine. It takes a while for the colour and thickness to change - thats why you leave for steeping for months :)

There will be lots of sloes in Central London - just got to get out and about and find them!

Re: Not looking like a good harvest this year

Not me...I've just got back from there now. Lots still on the bushes. I also found a whole load on the road to the leisure centre. Only managed to get 1/2 kilo before the heavens opened... I'm going back on the weekend to get more. There's plenty all around the area, so if any ones needs them - Hurs...
