Re: August Bank Holiday Sloe Picking 2012

The sloes in the photos look like the ones I found this morning, when checking out how things are growing this year. Last year I waited til end-September to even look for sloes and lots of the bushes were weighed down with lots of over-ripe fruit by that point, so I thought it would be worth a look ...

Re: slow cider and sherry

The recipes I have seen use still cider. I think the recipe originated in somerset/Devon where it is more widely available.

Blackberry Liqueur - Ch 4 Superscrimpers recipe?

Did anyone see this episode of Superscrimpers, where a lady made Blackberry liqueur? http://www.channel4.com/programmes/superscrimpers-waste-not-want-not/4od#3266557 Basically she boiled 300g of blackberries with 1lb sugar, allowed it to cool, added 1pt water and 1/2 bottle of vodka. She said that t...

Re: A stupid idea?

I don't know, but I would think that having the sloes move freely in the gin is quite important to the process of extracting the flavour from the fruit. Also, I'm not sure how much time/effort there is to be saved by using a bag at the start. I am planning to line a sieve with muslin, stand it over ...

Re: Gordon's Sloe Gin

If you have any Christmas markets on locally, or if you live near a good delicatessen/off licence, you might be able to get some 2010 vintage, made by traditional methods. Demijohn, up in Scotland make fab liqueurs and usually visit the food fairs up north at this time of year. Expensive, but worth ...

Re: Help frozen sloes thawed out brown and strong frangrance

Hmm... hopefully someone else will come along soon and help. Just wanted to add though - I had to remove some of my sloes from the gin after a week or so, because I hadn't pricked them and the gin hadn't coloured deeply. The ones I removed were more of a browny colour, so I am guessing that is a nat...

Re: Help frozen sloes thawed out brown and strong frangrance

I am confused by the timeline involved. When you say you thawed them for 'a few days', what do you mean? It wouldn't really take more than a few hours for them to thaw. Where were they, and how were they wrapped for the next few days? Freezing and defrosting does start to break down the fibres and m...

Re: Help I'm new to sloe gin making

Thats ok then, thanks for your tips again. I am shaking the mixture each day to try to get the sugar to dissolve and its getting better I think - its almost a week old now - hope am not shaking it too vigourously - is it possible to do this? Am just bit paranoid about bruising the sloes and the who...

Re: Too sloe or not to sloe or maybe wild damson?

They look like sloes to me? I thought that sloes have thorns, bullaces do not. I have picked purply blue ones (like the top pic) and black ones (like the bottom pic) from the same bush, and had assumed the ones most exposed to the sun had simply ripened more and lost their bloom. All were on thorny ...

Re: Help I'm new to sloe gin making

I wouldn't worry too much about sterilising your skewer - I just poured boiling kettle water over mine to rinse it. Sterilising is not as crucial for flavouring spirits in the same way as for wine making, because there is no fermentation process. You just need things to be very clean for normal hygi...

Re: what to expect after 4 weeks

I tasted some of mine today (3 weeks) because I needed to add more sloes to a pale-looking bottle. It tasted sugary and grim all at once. Nice with lime and tonic though. :D

Re: Help I'm new to sloe gin making

Nice headache developing after drinking sufficient half-stewed sloe gin to allow me to add extra sloes to the bottle. How we suffer for our art.... :P

Re: Help I'm new to sloe gin making

Thanks, I will have a rummage in the freezer.

Hmm, I will need to find a glass and some mixers so as not to waste the gin that will be displaced by the additional sloes. Damnit....
